How elapsed time is counted

The tool computes the civil difference between the anniversary start and the as-of date as whole years, then leftover months, then leftover days. That breakdown matches how most people describe “we’ve been together for three years, two months, and five days.” It also reports the total number of calendar days in the same span so you can cross-check against a simple day count.

Leap days inside the span are counted as ordinary calendar days. A February 29 start date is observed on February 28 in common years when computing the next anniversary, which matches how many civil systems treat leap-day birthdays and anniversaries outside leap years.

Finding the next anniversary

After measuring how many full years have already passed, the calculator looks for the next occurrence of the same month and day on or after the as-of date. If the anniversary for the current year has already passed, it advances one more year.
