US Business Days Calculator

Count workdays between two dates or add/subtract business days. Weekends and federal observed holidays excluded by default.

Also on the standalone business days calculator and 2026 holidays page with long-weekend planner.

The business days calculator counts workdays between two calendar dates or adds a fixed number of business days forward from a start date. Weekends are always excluded. You can optionally exclude US federal holidays using observed closure dates — when a legal holiday falls on Saturday or Sunday, the observed day shifts to the adjacent Friday or Monday. Use it whenever a contract, court rule, or vendor policy speaks in business days rather than calendar days.

Between dates versus add business days

The between dates mode answers how many Monday–Friday days lie in a range, with a breakdown of calendar days, weekend days, and federal holidays encountered. The add business days mode returns the calendar date you reach after N workdays from a start date — the pattern behind thirty business days from signature or five business days to respond. Pick the mode that matches the question; do not mix results from one mode with assumptions from the other.

Inclusive counting matters on the between-dates span. Confirm whether your agreement counts both endpoints or only the gap between them before sharing a number with counsel or a client. A one-day mismatch is small on a ninety-day window but large on a five-day notice period.

Federal holidays and observed dates

When holiday exclusion is enabled, the tool skips federal holidays using the same observed dates as the rest of this site — aligned with typical US bank and office closures. The result lists how many holidays fell inside your range and names them when helpful. State holidays, company floating days, and foreign market closures are not included unless you treat them manually.

Scan the 2026 holidays list when a due date lands near a long weekend. A business-day count that crosses Thanksgiving week looks very different from a raw calendar-day span on the days between dates tool.

Spreadsheet parity and contract language

Excel offers NETWORKDAYS for Monday–Friday counts and WORKDAY to add business days forward. This page uses the same weekend logic; optional holiday exclusion approximates NETWORKDAYS with a holiday list. Spreadsheet serial dates belong on the Excel date converter if you are moving between civil dates and workbook numbers before entering them here.

Always confirm your contract defines business day the same way — some agreements exclude only weekends; others also exclude federal observed holidays; still others follow a foreign calendar entirely. Quote the mode you used when sending results externally.

Common use cases

Legal and procurement teams translate ten business days to cure into a concrete calendar deadline. HR schedules return-to-work dates after leave measured in workdays. Finance checks whether a Net term expressed in business days pushes payment past month-end — pair with the net days calculator when invoice language mixes both concepts.

Project managers compare vendor SLAs stated in business days against internal calendar milestones. When only certain weekdays count — for example Tuesday-through-Saturday retail weeks — use the weekday counter instead of this default Monday–Friday model.

Worked examples

A notice period runs from Monday through the following two weeks with holidays off. Enter both boundary dates on the between-dates tab, enable holiday exclusion, and read the workday total. If the policy instead says add ten business days from receipt, switch to add mode, enter the receipt date, and read the landing calendar date.

A payment clause requires funds within fifteen business days of invoice. Add fifteen from the invoice date, then confirm whether your bank processes on the next open banking day by internal policy only. Backward planning from a fixed due date belongs on the deadline calculator.

Audit notes and company blackouts

Finance and legal teams should paste three fields into audit workpapers: start date, end date, and whether holidays were excluded. When a counterparty disputes a count, the disagreement is usually inclusive boundaries, not arithmetic — state explicitly whether the start day and end day count as business days.

Federal holidays on this page follow US rules. Company shutdowns, floating holidays, and regional observances may still need manual skips. Keep a short exception list beside any automated business-day quote you send to clients or regulators.

Procurement and notice periods

Vendor contracts frequently blend calendar-day acceptance periods with business-day cure windows. Run each clause on the appropriate calculator rather than assuming one mode covers the agreement. Paste the computed calendar landing date into the contract summary sheet with a note that holidays were excluded or included.

RFP deadlines that say “responses due ten business days after posting” should use add mode from the published posting date, not from the day the team first read the email. Disputes over receipt timing are procedural; the calculator only helps once the anchor date is agreed.

HR, leave, and return-to-work dates

Medical leave policies measured in workdays need add mode from the last day worked or from approval date — whichever the handbook names. Returning on a Monday after ten business days differs from ten calendar days when the span crosses a holiday Monday. Enable holiday exclusion when the handbook mirrors federal office closures.

Payroll cutoffs for partial leave accrual sometimes count business days in the span while benefits eligibility uses calendar months. Export both figures from different tools rather than forcing one number into two policies.

Banking and payment settlement

ACH and wire cutoffs often cite business days while interest accrues on calendar days. Finance teams should label which calculator produced each date in month-end checklists. A payment “due fifteen business days after invoice” landing on a Friday may still settle Monday depending on bank policy beyond this page’s arithmetic.

When invoice dates arrive as Excel serials from ERP exports, decode on the Excel date converter before entering civil dates here. Off-by-one serial errors at the input stage propagate cleanly through business-day math and look authoritative in client emails.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a business day on this calculator?

Monday through Friday are business days. Saturday and Sunday are excluded. Optional holiday exclusion removes US federal holidays using observed dates when a legal holiday falls on a weekend and offices observe Friday or Monday instead. Enable holiday exclusion when your handbook mirrors typical US federal office closures.

What is the difference between the two modes?

Between dates counts how many workdays lie in a range you specify. Add business days starts from one date and lands on the calendar day reached after N workdays forward. Pick the mode that matches whether your policy measures a span or sets a deadline.

Are state or company holidays included?

No. Only US federal holidays with observed dates used elsewhere on this site are optional to exclude. State holidays, company floating days, and foreign closures require manual adjustment or a separate calendar you maintain outside this tool. Add manual skips in a side list when company floating days or state holidays apply.

How does this compare to Excel NETWORKDAYS?

Both exclude weekends by default. Enabling holiday exclusion here approximates NETWORKDAYS with a holiday list. Confirm inclusive endpoint rules separately because spreadsheets and contracts disagree on whether both start and end dates count. Confirm inclusive endpoint rules separately because contracts disagree on both start and end days.

Does inclusive counting affect the total?

Yes on between-dates mode. Including both endpoints adds up to two days compared with exclusive counting on short windows. Match the toggle to your contract before quoting a number to counsel, clients, or finance partners. A one-day mismatch hurts five-day notice periods more than ninety-day windows.

When should I use calendar days instead?

When the governing text says calendar days, days, or consecutive days without mentioning business days, use days between dates or days until. Mixing calculators produces due dates that are early or late relative to the actual policy language. Switch calculators explicitly when the noun in the clause changes from calendar to business days.
