Weekday year

Workday Calendar Generator

Highlight Monday–Friday on a year grid; optionally skip US federal observed holidays.

Workday calendar

Enter a year. Toggle whether observed federal holidays count as off days.

The workday calendar highlights Monday–Friday dates on a year of month grids. An optional toggle treats US federal observed holidays as non-workdays so those cells are not counted as ordinary weekdays. It is a visual year of workdays, not a timesheet, not a labor-law schedule, and not a payroll tax calendar.

Monday through Friday as the default workweek

The highlight is the civil weekday set Monday–Friday. Saturday and Sunday stay unhighlighted. That matches many US office calendars. It does not encode Friday–Sunday religious weeks or Saturday–Thursday weeks used in some countries. Shift patterns such as 4-on/3-off belong on the shift calendar, not on this weekday highlighter.

Leap years add one extra civil day, which may be a weekday or a weekend day depending on January 1. The highlighted cell count therefore changes with both leap status and start weekday. For a numeric Monday–Friday total without a grid, use weekdays in a year.

Optional federal observed skip

When the skip toggle is on, dates that are US federal observed holidays are treated as off, even if they fall on Monday–Friday. Observed dates follow Saturday→Friday and Sunday→Monday. A Friday observed New Year’s Day is then unhighlighted like a weekend, not treated as a working Friday.

The skip list is federal only. State holidays, school professional days, and company shutdowns stay highlighted unless they happen to coincide with a federal observed date. Confirm local closures separately. Legal versus observed marks on a non-filtered year live on holiday calendar generator.

How to use the year grid

Enter a year, set whether federal observed holidays should be skipped, and calculate. Screenshot months as needed. The grid is for 2026 planning when you enter 2026; other years are available for comparison. There is no login and no stored timesheet.

Long weekends that come from Friday or Monday federal observances can be cross-checked on long weekends. This workday view shows the whole year of weekday cells; that finder names only the three-day federal stretches.

Worked examples

An operations analyst estimates weekday capacity for 2026 with federal skip on, then subtracts known company shutdown weeks by hand. The grid shows where federal Mondays already punch holes in the week; company weeks are extra holes they mark themselves.

A classroom teaching “there are five weekdays” uses the grid without holiday skip to show Monday–Friday coloring, then turns skip on to show how federal holidays interrupt that pattern in November and December.

What the highlighter will not do

It will not compute overtime, union 4-10 schedules, or compressed workweeks. It will not move deadlines. It will not emit .ics busy/free files. It will not apply snow days. Those omissions keep the URL honest: highlighted weekdays, optional federal skip.

Pay period overlays belong on the pay-period calendar. Academic instructional weekdays between two term dates belong on academic or school calendar tools. Do not stretch this year highlighter into those jobs.

Printing and comparison years

Print month by month for readability. A full year of highlighted cells is dense on letter paper. Compare a leap year with the previous common year to see how February 29 and shifted holidays change the highlighted map.

ISO week numbers are not the highlight criterion. A Thursday in ISO week 1 that falls in late December is still a weekday cell here if it is Thursday. Week-number calendars answer a different labeling question.

Capacity math from highlighted cells

Count highlighted cells for a rough weekday capacity, then subtract company shutdowns that are not federal. Do not count unhighlighted Saturdays as overtime slots unless your workplace actually works Saturday. The highlighter is a map, not an hours engine. Leap years can add one highlighted cell or none depending on whether the extra day is a weekday.

Compared with the numeric weekdays in a year total, the grid shows where the weekdays sit, including isolated Tuesdays after a Monday holiday when skip is on. The number and the picture answer different follow-up questions. Use both when a forecast needs a total and a month-by-month shape.

Skipping holidays versus skipping weekends

Weekends are always unhighlighted. The optional skip only adds federal observed weekdays to that unhighlighted set. Turning skip off still leaves Saturday and Sunday plain. There is no mode that highlights Saturday as a workday. Rotating weekend work belongs on the shift calendar.

Observed Friday holidays punch a hole before Saturday. Observed Monday holidays punch a hole after Sunday. Together they are the long-weekend geometry, visible as two unhighlighted weekdays wrapping the weekend when skip is on.

Printing a year of workdays

A full year of highlighted cells is dense on one sheet. Print two months per page for a break-room wall, or screenshot 2026 one quarter at a time for slides. Color-blind palettes should not rely on red versus green alone; use hatching for skipped federal days if you restyle the screenshot in a drawing tool. The site grid is the source; restyling is optional.

Comparing two years side by side shows how January 1 weekday moves the highlight pattern. A leap year next to a common year also shows whether February 29 is highlighted. That comparison is a better teaching aid than quoting 261 versus 262 without a picture.

Frequently asked questions

What days does the workday year calendar highlight?

It highlights Monday through Friday on a year of month grids. Saturday and Sunday stay unhighlighted. The pattern is a standard US office week, not a religious week and not a rotating shift cycle. Leap years may add an extra highlighted day or an extra weekend day depending on January 1.

How does the federal holiday skip option work?

When skip is on, US federal observed holidays are treated as non-workdays even if they fall on Monday–Friday. Observed dates use Saturday-to-Friday and Sunday-to-Monday mapping. State holidays and company shutdowns are not skipped unless they coincide with a federal observed date.

When should the weekday count tool be used instead?

Use weekdays in a year when you need a single Monday–Friday total, not a colored grid. Use this workday calendar when you need to see where those weekdays sit on each month, including holes left by optional federal observed skip. The count tool does not draw month pages.

Is this year grid a timesheet or labor-law calendar?

No. The page does not record hours, overtime, or union schedules. It does not encode 4-10 workweeks or weekend shifts. Those patterns belong on a shift calendar or an employer timesheet. This highlighter only marks civil weekdays with an optional federal observed filter.

How do long weekends relate to the highlighted cells?

Federal observed Fridays and Mondays that create a Friday–Monday stretch appear as skipped cells when the holiday toggle is on. The long-weekend finder names those stretches as a list. Use both: the list for names and dates, the grid for a year map of remaining weekdays.

Why do state holidays remain highlighted on the grid?

The skip list is the federal observed set used on this site, not a fifty-state holiday engine. A state holiday on a Monday remains a highlighted weekday unless it is also a federal observed date. Confirm state and local closures with official calendars before staffing. Company shutdown weeks are likewise manual.
