Federal stretches
Long Weekend Finder
US federal observed holidays that sit next to a weekend.
Long weekends
Enter a year. Observed Friday or Monday holidays make a three-day weekend.
This finder lists US federal observed holidays in a year that sit beside Saturday or Sunday and therefore create a Friday–Monday stretch of time off for people who follow the federal weekday-plus-weekend pattern. It uses the observed date, including the Saturday→Friday and Sunday→Monday shift. It is not travel advice, not a state-holiday list, and not a private-employer PTO policy.
Observed date, not always the legal date
US federal law sets a legal public holiday date and, for most holidays, an observed weekday when the legal date falls on a weekend. If the legal date is Saturday, the observed holiday is typically the preceding Friday. If the legal date is Sunday, the observed holiday is typically the following Monday. In-lieu Fridays and Mondays are what attach to the weekend to make a three-day block.
Thanksgiving is always a Thursday. It does not by itself create a Friday–Monday federal stretch, even though many private offices close Friday. This tool only flags federal observed dates that sit on Friday or Monday next to Saturday–Sunday. Thursday holidays are omitted unless a separate Friday observed holiday also exists that year—which Thanksgiving does not provide at the federal level.
Which holidays often create a long weekend
Several federal holidays are defined as a Monday: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Columbus Day (or Indigenous Peoples’ Day where an employer uses that name for the same Monday). Those Mondays always produce a Saturday–Sunday–Monday stretch for federal weekday schedules.
Fixed-date holidays—New Year’s Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Christmas Day—create a Friday–Monday stretch only when the observed date lands on Friday or Monday. A Wednesday Christmas is not a federal long weekend. Check 2026 rather than copying last year’s pattern.
How to use the finder
Enter a year and calculate. Read each qualifying observed date, the holiday name, and the Friday–Monday envelope. Compare with 2026 holidays if you also need legal dates that did not observe onto Friday or Monday.
The holiday calendar generator marks legal and observed dates on a year of month grids without filtering to long weekends. Use that when you need every federal mark. Use this page when the question is specifically which federal observances create a three-day weekend block.
Saturday and Sunday observe rule
The observe rule is the same mapping used across this site’s federal tools: Saturday legal dates observe Friday; Sunday legal dates observe Monday. New Year’s Day on Saturday therefore observes the Friday in December of the previous year in some edge cases at year boundaries—read the listed observed date carefully when January 1 is a Saturday.
Inauguration Day and other non-standard federal dates are not treated as a general long-weekend engine here. The list is the regular federal legal holiday set the site uses for planning-grade calendars, not a substitute for OPM’s official yearly memo.
Worked examples
A federal contractor staffing a help desk in 2026 enters the year, lists Friday and Monday observances, and publishes an on-call roster for those stretches only. They do not infer airline prices or beach traffic from the list.
A parent comparing school closures should not assume the local K–12 calendar matches federal long weekends. District calendars often close for different Mondays. Pair this list with the school calendar tool rather than treating federal Mondays as class-free days.
What this page refuses to claim
It does not recommend booking travel, stacking PTO, or driving on specific dates. It does not include state holidays such as Patriots’ Day or Confederate memorial days. It does not include company floating holidays. Private Friday-after-Thanksgiving closures are not federal long weekends.
Banks that close on federal holidays still follow observed dates; stock exchanges may differ. Confirm with the institution. This finder only states when the federal observed date sits beside a weekend.

Year-at-a-glance context lives on 2026 yearly calendars. Mark long weekends there after you know which observed dates qualify.
Monday holidays versus in-lieu Fridays
Always-Monday holidays such as Labor Day and Memorial Day are predictable Friday–Monday stretches every year. In-lieu Fridays happen only when a fixed legal date is Saturday. Staffing models should treat those two sources separately: one is every year, the other moves. 2026 may have a different in-lieu set than the previous year.
New Year’s Day on Saturday observing Friday can place that Friday in December. Read the dated row, not only the holiday name, so December staffing is not missed in a January-only mindset. Sunday January 1 observing Monday stays inside January and is easier to file.
Private closures that look like long weekends
Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and local holidays can create four-day weekends at a company without appearing here. Publish two lists: federal Friday–Monday stretches from this finder, and company extra days from HR. Merging them on one unlabeled flyer causes people to assume federal status for a company Friday.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a federal long weekend here?
A US federal observed holiday that lands on Friday or Monday, sitting beside Saturday and Sunday, so weekday-plus-weekend time off spans Friday through Monday. Monday-defined holidays always qualify. Fixed-date holidays qualify only when their observed date is Friday or Monday after the Saturday-to-Friday and Sunday-to-Monday rule.
How does Saturday and Sunday federal observance work?
When the legal holiday date is Saturday, the observed holiday is typically the preceding Friday. When the legal date is Sunday, the observed holiday is typically the following Monday. Those in-lieu weekdays attach to the weekend. The finder uses observed dates, not the weekend legal date sitting on Saturday or Sunday itself.
Why is Thanksgiving not listed as a long weekend?
Thanksgiving is always a Thursday. Federal law does not close Friday as a public holiday. Many private employers close Friday, but that is not a federal observed Friday. This tool only flags federal observed Fridays and Mondays next to the weekend, so Thursday Thanksgiving is omitted on purpose.
When do Christmas or July 4 create a long weekend?
They create a Friday–Monday stretch when the observed date is Friday or Monday. A midweek Independence Day or Christmas is not a federal long weekend. Leap years and January 1 weekday change those landings, so recalculate the year instead of reusing last year’s list.
Is this page travel advice or PTO advice?
No. The page lists calendar geometry for federal observed dates only. It does not recommend flights, hotels, or stacking vacation days. State holidays, school closures, and company floating holidays are out of scope and must be checked with those calendars separately. Friday after Thanksgiving is a company custom, not a federal long weekend.
How is this different from the holiday year grid?
The holiday calendar generator marks every federal legal and observed date on month grids. This finder filters to observed dates that create a Friday–Monday stretch. Use the grid when you need all federal marks; use this page when the three-day weekend question is the only job.
