Workdays remaining

Workdays Until

Count business days from a start date through a deadline.

Workdays until

Pick from and until dates. Optionally skip weekends and US federal holidays.

Need to add workdays to a start date instead? Try Add Business Days. For a full span count, see the business days calculator.

Workdays until answers a planning question payroll and project tools ask every week: how many business days remain between a from date and a deadline? This calculator counts remaining workdays through an until date, with optional skips for weekends and U.S. federal holidays observed on their calendar dates. By default it starts counting from the day after the from date — “how many workdays left after today” — and you can include the from date when you need an inclusive span.

Why a dedicated workdays-until page

Make a Calendar already ships a business days calculator for spans between two dates and an add business days tool that projects a result date after N workdays. Workdays-until is the remaining-count framing: you already know the deadline and want the count of work sessions left. That framing matches ticket SLAs, school assignment due dates, and “shipping cutoffs” where the answer is a number, not a new calendar date.

What counts as a workday

With both skip toggles on, a workday is a Monday–Friday that is not an observed U.S. federal holiday for the years covered in the page config. Weekends are tallied separately so you can see how much of the calendar span is non-working. Holidays that fall on weekends are already reflected in the observed-date list the site uses elsewhere — this page does not invent holiday dates.

Turn off “Skip weekends” if your team works seven days. Turn off “Skip US federal holidays” for private calendars that ignore federal closures, or for non-U.S. teams that maintain their own holiday set (this tool does not load other countries’ holidays).

Inclusive vs from-the-day-after

Default mode excludes the from date and includes every qualifying day through the until date. That matches “days of work still ahead if today already started.” Check “Include the from date” when you want the same inclusive count the business-days calculator uses for a closed interval. If the until date is before the from date, the tool asks you to fix the range rather than silently swapping endpoints.

Worked example

From a Monday through the following Friday with weekends skipped and no holidays, including the from date yields five workdays; excluding the from date yields four. Stretch the until date across a federal holiday Monday and the holiday is listed among skipped days when that toggle is on. Use that breakdown when explaining a timeline to stakeholders who only see calendar days.

Planning uses

Support teams estimate ticket capacity between now and a freeze date. Teachers count school days left before a due date (remember: this skip list is federal holidays, not local school calendars). Freelancers estimate billable days remaining in a sprint. Pair with deadline calculator when you need to work backwards from a due date by a fixed number of days instead of counting remaining workdays.

Limits and honesty

Federal holidays cover the U.S. observed set for nearby years only. State holidays, company floating days, and religious observances are not subtracted. Overnight shift math belongs on shift hours calculator, not here. International business calendars need a different holiday source — do not treat this count as legal notice of closures.

Shipping and change-freeze windows

Product teams often freeze changes N workdays before a launch. Count remaining workdays from today until the freeze start, then use add business days from a feature-complete date to verify you still land before the freeze. Keeping both tools open prevents mixing “days left” with “date after N days” arithmetic.

School and public-sector calendars

U.S. federal holidays are a useful baseline for federal offices and many banks, but K–12 calendars add in-service days and spring breaks this tool does not know. Always reconcile against the published district calendar when the count affects students. State holidays such as Juneteenth observance differences or regional days may also diverge from the federal observed list.

For net-30 style invoice due dates measured in calendar days, prefer net days calculator over workdays-until.

Reporting the result to stakeholders

When you share a workdays-until number in email or chat, include the from date, until date, and which skips you applied. “Eleven workdays remaining, weekends and U.S. federal holidays skipped, from date excluded” prevents someone else from re-counting calendar days and getting a different answer. Attach a link to this page with the same dates so teammates can reproduce the figure.

If leadership thinks in weeks, also mention calendar weeks spanned using weeks between dates. The two numbers answer different questions: weeks measure elapsed calendar time; workdays measure capacity.

Combining with holiday hubs

Browse the site’s holiday pages when you need the name and observance details for a skipped federal day. The workdays tool only needs the observed Y-M-D list; the holiday articles explain whether a Monday observance moved from a Sunday statutory date. Never hardcode holiday lists in spreadsheets when the site already maintains them for the current and nearby years.

International teams should keep a local holiday calendar in their project tracker and subtract those days manually, or turn off the U.S. federal toggle and skip only weekends.

Frequently asked questions

Does the count include today?

Not by default. The from date is excluded so the result reads as remaining workdays after that day. Check Include the from date when you want an inclusive closed interval like the business days calculator.

Which holidays are skipped?

Optional U.S. federal holidays on their observed dates for nearby years, using the same holiday engine as other Make a Calendar tools. State, religious, and company holidays are not included.

How is this different from add business days?

Add business days takes a start date and a number of workdays, then returns a result date. Workdays until takes two dates and returns how many workdays remain between them.

Can I count Saturday work?

Yes. Uncheck Skip weekends to treat Saturday and Sunday as ordinary days in the count. Holidays can still be skipped independently if that toggle stays on.

What if until is before from?

The tool shows an error instead of swapping dates. Fix the range so the until date is on or after the from date.

Is this legal advice about closures?

No. It is a planning aid using a federal holiday list. Confirm actual office closures with your employer or local authority.
