Weekdays left
School Days Remaining
Count weekdays from a start date through the last day of school.
School days remaining
Pick today (or any start) and the last day of school.
School days remaining counts weekdays from a start date through the last day of school. Saturday and Sunday are skipped. The span is inclusive: both the start and the last day count when they fall on Monday through Friday. District holidays, teacher workdays, snow closures, and early-release quirks are not subtracted. The number is a weekday remainder, not an official attendance calendar and not a substitute for the handbook the school publishes.
Weekdays left, not a year grid
Pick a start (often today) and the last day of school. The result shows how many Monday–Friday dates sit in that inclusive range, how many weekend days were skipped, and the total calendar length. If today falls inside the range, a note says so. If the last day is before the start, the range is rejected.
A school calendar paints a multi-month grid for the whole term. Use that when you need to see November and May on one screen. Use this remaining count when the question is a single integer for a countdown wall, a PTA newsletter, or a student who asks “how many school days are left.” A general weekday counter is the same weekday idea without school-specific labels; this page names the end date as last day of school so the form matches the question people type.
Instructional minutes, exam-only days, and half days still count as weekdays here. If the district treats a half day as a full attendance day, the integer still matches. If you need remaining instructional hours, you must apply local definitions after you have the weekday count.
What is not subtracted
Spring break, winter break, federal holidays that fall on weekdays, staff development days, and weather closures are still weekdays on the civil calendar. This tool does not ingest a district iCal. Teachers who want a number that matches the office should subtract known closures on paper or start the range after a long break so the break is outside the span.
US federal holidays that often fall inside a school year include Labor Day, Thanksgiving Thursday (and sometimes Friday), Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, and Juneteenth depending on the last-day date. Check holidays 2026 for civil dates, then decide whether your district is in session. Do not assume a federal list equals a school list: many districts close for additional religious or local days.
Snow days that will be made up on a weekend or by extending the last day change the end date. Recalculate when the board publishes a new last day rather than editing the weekday total by hand in two places.
Inclusive counting
If start and last day are the same Friday, the remaining count is 1, not 0. That matches “we still have today.” A countdown poster that should hit zero after dismissal can subtract one after school ends, or you can set the start to tomorrow morning. Be explicit in the poster caption so families do not argue about today.
A start on Saturday with a Friday last day still counts only the weekdays in between and the Friday. Weekend start dates are allowed; they simply contribute zero to the weekday total. A last day on Saturday is unusual for US public schools; if you enter one, that Saturday does not add a school day.
Leap Day, when it falls on a weekday inside the span, counts like any other weekday. See the leap year explainer if you are checking whether February 29 exists in the school year that crosses it.
Classroom and family uses
Elementary classrooms often run a paper chain or number line. Recalculate on Monday mornings if the start date is always “today,” because the integer drops by five after a full school week, not by seven. Families planning summer travel can compare remaining weekdays against vacation request rules that require a minimum attendance count.
Seniors may have an earlier last day than underclassmen. Run the tool twice with two end dates rather than averaging. Year-round tracks with intersessions need the next track-out date as the end, not June, or the count will include off-track weekdays that are not school days in that model either—again, subtract or shorten the range.
Homeschool umbrellas that count 180 instructional days can use the weekday remainder as a planning ceiling, then subtract planned off days. The ceiling is not a legal 180-day proof by itself.
Worked remainder examples
Start Monday 12 May, last day Friday 6 June, no adjustment for holidays. Count weekdays inclusive. Memorial Day Monday, if it sits in the range, is still included until you subtract it. Announce both the raw weekday number and any subtracted holidays so parents see the method.
Start today in January with last day in early June. The integer is large and includes winter break weekdays. For a “days until summer” poster that should ignore break, either split the year into segments or wait until the first Monday after break to reset the start.
A Friday last day of school with a start on that same Friday shows 1. After weekend, a start on Saturday with the same last day (now in the past) is invalid because the last day is before the start. Move the last day only when the district really extended the year.

Frequently asked questions
What days of the week does this remaining count include?
It includes Monday through Friday only. Saturday and Sunday are skipped. The span is inclusive, so the start date and the last day of school each count when they fall on a weekday. The result also reports weekend days skipped and the total calendar length of the range.
How are snow days and school holidays treated here?
They are not subtracted. Any weekday in the range counts, including spring break, staff days, and weather closures. This page does not read a district calendar file. Subtract known closures on paper, or move the start date to the Monday after a long break, then recalculate when the board changes the last day.
Why is this not a full printed school-year grid?
The job is a single remaining integer between two dates, labeled for last day of school. A school calendar page draws months so you can see the whole term. Use the grid for layout and this remaining count for a countdown poster, newsletter, or a quick “how many days left” answer.
Is the last day of school counted in the total?
Yes, when that last day is a weekday. A start and last day that are the same Friday yield 1, meaning today still counts. If a poster should hit zero after dismissal, subtract one or set the start to the next morning and say so in the caption so families share the same rule.
When should a teacher pick a start date other than today?
Pick tomorrow if today should not count after dismissal. Pick the Monday after a break if break weekdays should be outside the span. Pick a senior last-day date for that class only. Year-round tracks should end at the next track-out, not at a June date that includes off-track weekdays.
How does a weekend-only span affect the weekday total?
If both ends fall on the same weekend and no weekday sits between them, the weekday count is zero. A Saturday start with a later Friday last day still counts the weekdays in between. A last day on Saturday does not add a school day. Last day before start is rejected as an invalid range.
