Instructional days
School Calendar Generator
Weekdays between first day and last day of school — no snow-day engine.
School calendar
Enter first day and last day. Holidays you close are not subtracted unless they fall on a weekend.
The school calendar generator counts K–12 instructional weekdays from a first day of school to a last day of school and shows the month grids in between. It does not simulate snow days, delayed openings, or makeup days. It is not the school-days-remaining countdown, and it is not the academic (college term) calendar.
First day to last day, instructional weekdays
Enter the district’s first student day and last student day. The count is Monday–Friday dates in that inclusive span. Teacher workdays before students arrive should not be used as first day unless you are counting staff days on purpose and say so. Last day should be the last student day, not the last teacher workday, unless again you are counting staff.
School days remaining answers how many weekdays are left from today (or a chosen date) until last day. This generator sketches the whole year: total instructional weekdays plus month grids. Use remaining when the year is underway; use this page when building or explaining the year shape.
No snow-day engine
Snow, heat, and emergency closures are not predicted and not subtracted. After a closure, either shorten the remaining count yourself or move last day later according to board policy. Publishing this page’s original total after three snow days without a footnote would misstate instructional days toward a state minimum.
Federal holidays that fall on weekdays still count in the raw weekday total unless they are weekends. Most districts close on some federal Mondays and also on others that are not federal (for example a Friday after Thanksgiving). Subtract the district’s closed weekdays using the adopted calendar, not only 2026 holidays.
Distinct from college terms
The academic calendar is for semester start/end pairs, often mid-August to mid-December. K–12 years are typically late August to early June with a long summer gap. Using the college tool for a district year would invite a single range that includes summer if someone typed August to June incorrectly—or exclude summer correctly but still miss K–12-specific closed days. Keep K–12 on this URL.
Preschool and private schools may use different first and last days than the public district. Enter the dates that apply to the children you are planning for.
How to use the generator
Enter first day and last day, calculate, read the weekday total and the month grids. Mark teacher in-service days on the printout so they are not treated as student instructional days. The tool cannot know those dates.
If you need every Tuesday the band meets, use date-on-weekday for Tuesdays inside the school year, then clip to first/last day. This school calendar does not list a single weekday’s dates; it totals weekdays and shows months.
Worked examples
A PTA prints the 2026–next year shape from the published first and last student days, then writes holiday breaks from the district PDF onto the month grids. The weekday total is a starting point before subtracting those breaks.
A homeschool umbrella asks for a 180-weekday plan. The family sets first and last day to span enough Monday–Friday dates, then subtracts travel weeks. State compulsory-attendance rules are legal matters this page does not interpret.
State minimums and this count
Many states set a minimum number of instructional days or hours. Hours are not computed here. Day counts here are civil weekdays, not hour-weighted days, not half days, not exam days with shortened bells. Convert with the district’s hour table if compliance is the question.
Makeup days added in June change last day. Regenerate with the new last day rather than adding integers in a spreadsheet that already subtracted holidays twice.
Limits
No bus routing, no bell times, no IEP service-minute calendars. No automatic import of district ICS. For a downloadable holiday ICS, use the holiday ICS generator, which is federal, not district.
Year grids of federal holidays remain a separate overlay. This K–12 tool is first day, last day, weekday count, month pictures.
Half days and early dismissals
Half days still count as a weekday in this total if they fall on Monday–Friday. Hour-based state rules may treat them as a fraction. Keep a separate half-day list from the district PDF. Do not pretend this integer is hour-weighted. That limitation is why the page refuses to call the total instructional hours.
Early-dismissal professional development afternoons are still student days if students attended in the morning, depending on local definitions. The generator cannot know. Annotate rather than expecting a toggle.
Summer school
Summer school is a second range: enter first and last summer student days as a separate run, not as an extension of the school-year last day through July. Combining them would count June weekdays that were already vacation. Two runs, two totals, two sets of month grids.
First day after Labor Day
Many districts start the Tuesday after Labor Day. That Tuesday is first day; Labor Day Monday is not a student day and should not be entered as first day if students were off. Entering Labor Day as first day inflates the weekday total by one. Use the published student first day from the board PDF.
Frequently asked questions
What instructional days does the K–12 school calendar count?
It counts Monday–Friday dates from the first student day to the last student day and shows the month grids between those dates. It does not subtract snow days, in-service days, or district-specific breaks unless those dates fall on a weekend. Official board calendars override this sketch.
How is this different from school days remaining?
School days remaining is a countdown of weekdays left until last day from today or a chosen date. This generator is the full-year shape: total instructional weekdays plus months. Use remaining once the year is in progress; use this page when laying out first day to last day.
Why does this school calendar omit a snow-day engine?
Snow and emergency closures are local and unpredictable. The page refuses to guess them. After a closure, change last day or subtract days according to board policy, then regenerate. Leaving the original total in place after closures would misstate progress toward a state day minimum.
When should the academic calendar be used instead?
Use the academic calendar for college or university terms with a term start and term end, such as a fifteen-week semester. Use this school calendar for K–12 first day to last day. Mixing them imports the wrong break structure and the wrong audience into the weekday total.
How should district closed weekdays be subtracted from the total?
Start from the weekday total, then subtract closed weekdays listed on the adopted district calendar. Federal holiday lists are incomplete for K–12 because districts close extra days. Teacher workdays should not be first or last student day unless you are intentionally counting staff days rather than student days.
Is the weekday total the same as instructional hours?
No. The total is civil Monday–Friday dates, not bell minutes, half days, or exam-schedule hours. State minimums that use hours need the district hour table. Do not treat this count as a compliance filing without converting days to hours under local rules.
