Term span

Academic Calendar Generator

Weekdays and months between a term start and end date.

Academic calendar

Enter term start and last day of term. Not an official registrar calendar.

The academic calendar generator takes a term start date and a term end date, counts weekdays between them, and shows the month grids the term touches. It is a planning aid for college and university-style terms, not an official registrar calendar, not a degree-audit system, and not the K–12 school calendar tool that counts instructional weekdays from first day to last day of school.

Term span versus registrar truth

Registrars publish add/drop, exam weeks, reading days, and commencement. This page does not ingest those files. It counts Monday–Friday dates from start through end (inclusive or as the form states) and draws month grids so a department can see the term on a wall. Official dates always win over this sketch.

The K–12 school calendar is a different job: first day of school to last day of school for a district-style year, still without a snow-day engine. Do not use this academic tool for elementary bell schedules. Do not use the K–12 tool for a fifteen-week semester that starts mid-August and ends mid-December.

Weekday count inside the term

The weekday total is the number of Monday–Friday dates in the span. It does not subtract federal holidays, spring break, or reading week unless those days are weekends. Subtract break weeks yourself after you know the weekday total. That honesty keeps the number from pretending to be contact hours or Carnegie units.

For remaining weekdays until a last day of school in a K–12 sense, school days remaining is the countdown form. This academic page is the whole-term sketch with month grids, not a days-left ticker.

How to enter a term

Enter first day of classes (or the date your department treats as term start) and last day of exams or last day of classes, depending on which end your planning uses. State in a note which convention you chose. Generate month grids for every month the term touches.

Overlay 2026 holidays for federal closures that fall on weekdays inside the term. Many campuses remain open on some federal holidays; others close. The federal list is a checklist, not an automatic subtraction.

Worked examples

A department chair sketches Fall term from the Monday before Labor Day through the second Friday in December of 2026. They read the weekday count, then subtract Thanksgiving week by hand. The month grids show November’s shape so they can see the short week.

A continuing-education certificate runs ten weeks from a Wednesday start. Staff enter start and end, confirm the weekday count matches the billed contact plan, and print the two or three month grids for the classroom door. Registrar SIS dates remain the source for transcripts.

Intersessions and summer terms

Short Maymester or summer terms still fit: two dates plus weekday count plus the months touched. A three-week intersession that crosses June 30 still shows June and July grids. Do not force those dates into a fiscal July-start year unless the budget office asked for fiscal labels—use the fiscal calendar for that overlay.

Multi-term academic years (fall + spring) are two runs of this tool, not one range from August to May unless you truly want every weekday including winter break counted. Most planners run terms separately so winter break is not treated as instructional weekdays.

What the grids are for

Month grids help faculty see where a Tuesday/Thursday section sits across month boundaries. They are not room-booking software. They are not ADA attendance trackers. Screenshot and annotate.

ISO week numbers for accreditation reports should come from week number 2026 if the report speaks ISO. Academic “week 5 of the term” is usually a count from term start, which disagrees with ISO week 5.

Limits

No exam-conflict matrix, no credit-hour engine, no time zone for distant campuses beyond the civil dates you type. Distant campuses should enter dates in the campus local calendar, not a converted UTC day that slipped the date line.

If the question is only “how many Mondays in 2026,” use the weekday occurrences calculator. This page needs two term dates, not a year plus one weekday.

Contact hours versus weekday counts

A Tuesday/Thursday section that meets thirty times needs thirty Tuesdays and Thursdays inside the term, which is not the same as the total Monday–Friday count. After you have the weekday total, still map the meeting pattern on the month grids. This generator will not explode a TTH pattern into dates; the date-on-weekday finder can list Tuesdays, which you then clip to the term.

Labor Day, Thanksgiving week, and storm closures are not auto-removed. Faculty should mark canceled meetings on the printout. The weekday total remains a ceiling, not a promised meeting count.

Accreditation week numbering

Some reports ask for week of term, counted from the start date, skipping breaks or not according to local rules. ISO week numbers from the week-number calendar will disagree with week of term. Keep both systems labeled if a report mixes them. 2026 fall term week 1 is almost never ISO week 1.

Frequently asked questions

What does the academic term calendar generator compute?

It takes a term start and term end, counts Monday–Friday dates in that span, and shows month grids the term touches. It is a planning sketch for college-style terms. It does not load registrar add/drop rules, exam weeks, or commencement, and those official calendars override this page.

How is this different from the K–12 school calendar?

The school calendar is first day to last day of a K–12 year and instructional weekdays without a snow-day engine. This academic page is for semester or quarter terms with start and end dates you name, including fifteen-week fall terms. Do not use it for elementary bell schedules or district snow makeup.

Why are holidays not subtracted from the weekday count?

Federal holidays, spring break, and reading week are policy choices. The tool counts civil Monday–Friday dates so you can subtract breaks knowingly. Automatic subtraction would hide whether a campus stays open on a federal Monday. Overlay a holiday list, then subtract what your campus actually closes.

When should school days remaining be used instead?

Use school days remaining when the question is how many K–12 instructional weekdays are left until the last day of school. Use this academic generator when you need the whole term’s weekday total plus the month grids the term covers. One is a countdown; the other is a term sketch.

How should fall term and spring term be entered?

Run the generator twice, once per term, unless you intentionally want winter break weekdays included in one August–May span. Separate runs keep break weeks out of the instructional weekday total. State whether the end date is last class day or last exam day in your notes so later readers know the convention.

Is this page an official registrar academic calendar?

No. Transcripts, visa enrollment dates, and financial-aid census dates come from the registrar. This page is a weekday count and month-grid sketch for departmental planning. If the two disagree, the registrar wins. Do not cite this sketch on an I-20 or an accreditation filing.
