Ethiopia's tourism slogan is literally accurate: the calendar has thirteen months. Twelve of them run exactly thirty days, and the thirteenth, Pagume, has five days in an ordinary year and six before a leap year. The arrangement gives a 365-day year with a leap day every fourth year, matching the Julian leap rule rather than the Gregorian one.
The regular thirty-day months make date arithmetic straightforward. Day one of month three is always the sixty-first day of the year, with no need to remember which months are short — a genuine practical advantage that the Gregorian calendar never achieved.
Why the year is seven or eight years behind
The Ethiopian church calculated the date of the Annunciation differently from the calculation that shaped the common era, producing an epoch several years later. As a result the Ethiopian year number runs seven years behind the Gregorian year for part of the year and eight years behind for the rest, with the switch occurring at the Ethiopian new year in September. This is not an error or an approximation; it is a different reckoning of the same historical anchor point.
The consequence for everyday use is that a single subtraction rule never works reliably. Whether to subtract seven or eight depends on the month, which is precisely the kind of detail a converter exists to handle.
Enkutatash and the new year
The Ethiopian year begins on 1 Meskerem, celebrated as Enkutatash, which currently falls on September 11 in the Gregorian calendar and September 12 in the year preceding a leap year. The numeric year-month-day form printed alongside the name is unambiguous and is the safest thing to copy between systems.

This is not a ceremonial calendar. Government records, school terms, business contracts, birth certificates, and newspapers all use Ethiopian dates.
