A similar custom involves gifts. People buy or make presents for their relatives. Children race to see what Santa Claus brought on Christmas morning. Santa brings gifts to children worldwide on Christmas Eve.

 

Some families even cook together on this day. Common foods are roasted turkey, ham, and side dishes like mashed potato and stuffing. Desserts include cookies and pies.

 

Christmas Symbols

 

Several symbols signify Christmas. The top of the tree is the star of Bethlehem that pointed the Wise Men to Jesus. The nativity scene with Mary, Joseph, and animals shows Jesus' birth in a stable.

 

A further symbol is the Christmas wreath. This round decoration of evergreen branches represents eternal life. Many people hang wreaths at the door for visitors.

 

Lights are also used for decorations around Christmas. Many homes and streets have colorful lights during this season. These lights indicate hope and joy.

 

Celebrating Around the World

 

Countries celebrate Christmas in different ways. Some places hold church services to commemorate Jesus' birth. Some have festive parades and community events.

 

In Mexico, families celebrate Las Posadas - Mary and Joseph searching for a home. In Italy, on Christmas Eve, people eat La Vigilia.
