Father's Day is a secular holiday variably observed in different countries all across the globe to appreciate the role of fathers in the development of their children as love, guidance, and strength.

The notion of observing Father's Day is believed to have been borrowed from Mother’s Day. Well, you can’t have Mother’s Day and not have then her most important interdependent half, the father.

Sonora Smart Dodd first counseled on commemorating a father’s figure in society; the memory of her Father, a Civil War veteran, led to the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. Since then, Father’s Day, which was established as a public holiday in many countries, including the United States, in 1972, has come in handy in creating time to thank fathers worldwide.

Celebrating Father’s Day

Father’s Day is celebrated in many ways with little acts of appreciation to their one and only dad. Many families do activities like going on trips, throwing a party, playing a round of golf, going fishing, or watching a game of their teams with their fathers, as is expected during this day.

Some people prefer giving their fathers some mementos, e.g., making picture cards, buying them watches, or other accessories accompanying their hobbies. In traditional observances that are less rowdy, families express love to their fathers by cooking their best foods, having some barbecue at home, or just hanging out at the house with the father.

Ways to Show Dad You Care

This Father’s Day, instead of the usual greetings and gifts, make it extra special by getting creative and planning activities that reflect your dad’s personality and quirks. For example, you can prepare a guided tour to his favorite spot or record a video presentation showing all your favorite moments with him and how important he is to the family.

Even an ordinary letter or a poem can light up his day. Whether it is a dad, granddad, or any other father figure, the key is showing appreciation and making them feel special. After all, the thought and effort make Father's Day truly meaningful.
