Flag Day is when history remembers the birth of the American flag in the year 1777. The first American flag, known as the Stars and Stripes, was introduced to the world by the Continental Congress during the American Revolution.

However, it was not until a 1916 Presidential proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson that the world knew of the June 14th observance of Flag Day; although it is not a public holiday, it is a lot revered as an emblem of unity and patriotism amongst Americans.

How We Celebrate Flag Day

Generally, Flag Day is a period within the year set aside, especially by the Americans, to pay respect to the flag and the values it represents. Some of the activities carried out on this day include a flag-raising ceremony and education on the American flag, its characteristics, and its history. Most people also decorate their houses with the flag in the spirit of love of one’s country, reciting the Pledge or singing national anthems.

On the other hand, this day is also utilized by most schools and organizations to educate the people who participate in such a day on how the flag deserves to be treated and its relevance to American history. Such activities are developed to instill the importance of the flag in reminding the citizens of the ideals and freedoms that the flag represents and to promote a sense of oneness among the people.

Respecting the Flag

This day also encourages all to study Flag Day's history and meaning. There are lots of interesting Flag Day events around and outside the city. There may be a nearby historical site, museum, or exhibition where one can see the flag’s evolution. Another way to observe the holiday is by displaying it by the official U.S. Flag Code. Whether you attend a local celebration or reflect on the values that the flag embodies, Flag Day reminds you of the nation's journey and its enduring ideals.
