Groundhog Day is a holiday that is profoundly American, with its origins coming from a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition where it is said that if a groundhog comes out of his hole after a long hibernation and sees his shadow, it means that winter will continue for another six weeks. Otherwise, spring will come early.

 

While it might seem silly to predict the outcome of the seasons due to a small and adorable animal, this holiday remains popular, even more so since the introduction of Punxsutawney Phil. Dubbed the official and the world's most well-known groundhog, this small creature has the duty of informing us whether the world should brace themselves for six more weeks of winter or finally welcome spring.

 

This belief was first found in the celebration of Candlemas Day. In these old European customs, churchgoers attended mass with candles to be blessed, and weather forecasts were made. German immigrants settled in America, bringing this practice, which in the 19th century turned into what is now a Groundhog Day fest.

Groundhog Day is mainly celebrated in Pennsylvania, especially in Punxsutawney. As a result, this town attracts thousands of tourists and media worldwide, with everyone tuning in to wait for Phil to see what the country faces.

 

With many people flocking to see the country’s fate, there’s no wonder that people start celebrating Groundhog Day as early as three in the morning, with people blasting music and dancing because of Punxsutawney Phil’s big day.

Punxsutawney Phil is an interesting character. The townsfolk claim he’s over a hundred years old due to a magic potion he drinks, which gives him another seven years after he does so again.

 

Did you know that the tradition gained a global audience due to the film 'Groundhog Day' released in 1993 starring Bill Murray, who played a weatherman stuck in a time loop on the same day?
