During this holiday, Americans remember military veterans. This is why this day was originally called "Remembrance Day." That day ended World War I, which formally ended on November 11, 1918. It was a significant date because the fighting stopped at 11:00, in the 11th month. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared The First Armistice Day in honor of World War I troops.

In 1938, Congress made November 11 a legal holiday for world peace - Armistice Day. And then there was World War II and the Korean War, and people wanted to honor all veterans - not just World War I veterans - and in 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Armistice Day bill. This was changed so Americans could honor veterans from all conflicts.

Changes Over the Years

Some holidays were moved to Mondays under the Uniform Holiday Bill of 1968, creating three-day weekends for federal employees. The fourth Monday in October became Veterans Day. This confused many states and citizens who preferred to celebrate on November 11.

This discontent led President Gerald Ford to sign a 1975 law resetting Veterans Day to November 11. Since then, it has been observed annually on this day. The law provides that even on a weekend, November 11 offers federal employees a day off on a related weekday.

Celebrating Veterans Day

Veterans Day activities are held nationwide. Communities often have parades and ceremonies for veterans. Schools teach students about this day and how to thank the military.

Some come to memorials or cemeteries to honor the buried. Some organizations give away meals or discounts to veterans for their service. The day honors the sacrifices of military members and also urges Americans to focus on their contribution to peace and freedom.
