How the calendar is structured

The year has twelve months and begins with Chaitra. In an ordinary year Chaitra has thirty days; in a leap year it has thirty-one. The following five months — Vaishakha, Jyaishtha, Ashadha, Shravana, and Bhadra — each have thirty-one days, and the final six months each have thirty. The totals work out to 365 days in a common year and 366 in a leap year.

Leap years follow the Gregorian rule exactly, applied to the corresponding Gregorian year. That deliberate choice means the two calendars never drift apart, unlike older Indian calendars based on sidereal astronomy. The national calendar was designed to be a fixed, predictable civil system rather than an astronomical one.

When the year starts

Chaitra 1 falls on March 22 in an ordinary year and March 21 when the Gregorian year is a leap year. That places the new year near the spring equinox, which is the point: the reform committee anchored the calendar to the equinox so it would stay in step with the seasons permanently.

Because the year begins in late March, the Saka year number changes partway through the Gregorian year. For dates from late March to December, the Saka year is the Gregorian year minus 78. For January through most of March, it is the Gregorian year minus 79. A single subtraction rule therefore fails for roughly a quarter of the year, which is the most common source of manual conversion errors.

The Saka era

Years count from the Saka era, an ancient reckoning traditionally associated with the start of a king's reign in the first century of the common era. The era was already in wide use across the subcontinent and in Southeast Asia long before the modern reform, appearing in inscriptions, astronomical texts, and regional calendars. The 1957 reform kept the familiar era while standardizing the month lengths and leap rule.

National calendar versus regional calendars

India uses many calendars. Regional systems such as the Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, and Vikram Samvat calendars differ in their era, their new year, their month names, and often in whether they are solar or lunisolar. The national calendar is none of those; it is a separate civil standard created to give the country one official system for government use, sitting alongside the Gregorian calendar rather than replacing regional traditions.

This matters for a practical reason: religious festivals are not set by the national calendar. Diwali, Holi, Navratri, and most other observances follow lunisolar calculations that vary by region and require an almanac rather than arithmetic. A Saka date tells you nothing about when a festival falls.

The Gazette of India prints both dates. Government communications, some official calendars, and news broadcasts on All India Radio use the Saka date alongside the Gregorian one. It appears on certain official documents and stamps. In everyday commercial and personal life the Gregorian calendar dominates, so the national calendar is encountered mainly in official contexts and in scholarly work on Indian chronology.

The months are Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyaishtha, Ashadha, Shravana, Bhadra, Ashvina, Kartika, Agrahayana, Pausha, Magha, and Phalguna. Transliterations vary between sources — you may see Bhadrapada for Bhadra, or Margashirsha for Agrahayana, both drawn from the older Sanskrit month names the reform adapted. When entering a Saka date, use month numbers from one to twelve with Chaitra as month one, and remember that Chaitra can hold thirty-one days in a leap year.

Why the calendar was reformed

At independence India had dozens of calendars in official and religious use, differing in era, month structure, and the astronomical basis for their calculations. A government committee was appointed to recommend a single civil standard, and its report produced the calendar in use today. The committee's central decision was to abandon sidereal calculation in favor of a fixed rule tied to the Gregorian leap cycle, trading astronomical purity for permanent predictability.

That trade-off is why the national calendar can be converted with arithmetic alone while regional calendars generally cannot. It also explains why the reform did not displace the traditional systems: festivals depend on the astronomical calculations the committee deliberately set aside, so religious practice continued unchanged alongside the new civil standard.

Applying it to dates before the reform produces a proleptic result: arithmetically consistent, but not a date anyone recorded at the time.
