Persian / Jalali Date

The Persian / Jalali date converter translates between the Gregorian calendar used internationally and the Solar Hijri (Jalali) calendar used in Iran and Afghanistan. This is the solar Hijri calendar — not the lunar Hijri calendar handled by the Islamic date tool.

Solar Hijri vs lunar Hijri

Jalali years track the tropical year with a leap structure based on a 33-year cycle approximation. Months run Farvardin through Esfand. Nowruz, the new year, falls on the March equinox region in Gregorian terms. Lunar Hijri months follow moon phases and drift through the seasons — a completely different system. If you need Ramadan dates from moon-sighting or civil tabular Hijri, use the Islamic converter instead.

Algorithm notes

Conversions use a widely published algorithmic mapping (jalaali-js style arithmetic) rather than a live astronomical observation of the Tehran meridian. For everyday civil conversions the difference is negligible; for scholarly astronomy you may prefer an equinox-based ephemeris. Month lengths alternate 31 days for the first six months and 30 for the next five, with Esfand 29 or 30 depending on leap status.

Worked example

A Gregorian date in late March 2026 typically falls in Farvardin of the corresponding Jalali year near Nowruz. Entering a Jalali date such as 1403-10-25 returns the matching Gregorian civil day. Always keep Y-M-D order consistent: year, month number 1–12, day.

Names, numerals, and input format

Month names here use common English transliterations (Farvardin, Ordibehesht, …). Day and year are Western digits in Y-M-D order for paste compatibility. If your source uses Persian digits or a day-month-year written order, normalize before pasting. Invalid month numbers outside 1–12 or impossible days are rejected by the arithmetic when they cannot map cleanly.

Leap years and Esfand

Jalali leap determination in the algorithmic calendar follows the 33-year cycle approximation used by many converters. Edge days near Nowruz can differ by a day from astronomical official calendars in rare cases — verify critical legal dates against an official Iranian calendar publication when stakes are high.

Humans prefer “25 Dey 1403”; machines prefer 1403-10-25. This converter always exposes the numeric Y-M-D form for interchange and shows the month name for readability. When storing dates in databases, keep a Gregorian ISO date as the canonical instant and treat Jalali as a display conversion unless your product explicitly requires Solar Hijri storage.
