The second-Sunday rule

Find May, find every Sunday in May, and take the second one. That is the whole civil rule used here. The date always lands between May 8 and May 14 inclusive, because the second Sunday cannot sit earlier than the 8th or later than the 14th. Years when May 1 is a Sunday put Mother’s Day on May 8. Years when May 1 is a Monday put it on May 14.

Several other countries use May 10, a different May Sunday, or a March date. This calculator reports the common US rule only. International families should confirm the local date before booking travel.

A greeting-card campaign aimed at more than one country must print the rule, not only the 2026 US date. Copy that worked in the United States will be wrong in a market that uses a fixed May 10.

Brunch, flowers, and school timelines

Restaurants fill seatings weeks ahead of the second Sunday. Florists need the date to schedule rose imports and delivery routes. Elementary classrooms often make gifts on the Friday before so they go home before the weekend. Enter 2026 first, then adjacent years if a vendor contract covers more than one spring.
