The fourth-Thursday rule

Find November, list the Thursdays, and take the fourth. The civil date always lands between November 22 and November 28 inclusive. A November 1 that is a Thursday puts Thanksgiving on November 22. A November 1 that is a Friday puts it on November 28. Those endpoints are the whole window. A flyer that prints “Thanksgiving, November 24” every year will be wrong more often than it is right.

Canada’s Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October, a different country and a different rule. This calculator reports the US federal Thursday only. Cross-border families need both dates and should not copy a US result onto a Canadian school form.

Federal holiday status and observed closures

Thanksgiving Day is a US federal holiday. Federal offices close. Many banks and public schools close. The Postal Service does not run regular delivery. Private employers set their own policies, but the civil date on this page is the date those policies usually name. When the holiday is discussed as “Thanksgiving weekend,” Friday is often an extra day off by custom, not by the federal statute that names the Thursday.

Black Friday sits on the following day

Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving, so it moves whenever Thanksgiving moves. It is not a federal holiday. Retail hours, doorbuster times, and online sale windows are set by merchants. Compute Thanksgiving first, then add one day for Black Friday. Do not search a frozen November 25 and assume it is always the sale day.

Open Black Friday when the brief is merchandising rather than the federal Thursday. A warehouse that staffs Thursday as a holiday and Friday as a peak sale day needs both labels in writing. Cyber Monday is the following Monday and likewise depends on the Thursday computed here.

Travel, kitchens, and school calendars

US domestic aviation and highways peak around this Thursday. School districts often close Wednesday afternoon through Friday, but the official holiday remains the Thursday. Nineteenth-century proclamations and a late-1930s experiment with an earlier November date are history. Federal law now fixes Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November. This page applies that modern rule to the year in the form. It does not reconstruct proclamation years or state-by-state nineteenth-century dates.

Mixing a historical “last Thursday” phrase with the current fourth-Thursday statute is how worksheets end up a week off in some Novembers — the fourth Thursday is not always the last Thursday, because November can contain five Thursdays.

Fourth Thursday versus last Thursday

November has 30 days. When November 1 is a Thursday, there are five Thursdays: the 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th. The fourth is the 22nd; the last is the 29th. Those are different days. The federal holiday is the fourth, not the last. A worksheet that says “last Thursday in November” is using the wrong rule for US Thanksgiving.
