The next leap day calculator finds the next February 29 on or after a date you enter (default today) and states that leap day’s weekday. It looks forward through Gregorian leap years, skipping century years that are not divisible by 400. It is not a yes/no leap-year checker for a typed year, and it is not a list of the next twenty leap years.
On or after the input date
If the input is February 29 of a leap year, that same date is the answer. If the input is March 1 of a leap year, the next leap day is four years later, or later still when a century skip intervenes. If the input is January 15 of a leap year, the upcoming February 29 of that same year is next.

Gregorian leap rule used
A year has a leap day if it is divisible by 4, except century years, which need to be divisible by 400. After a non-leap century, the gap between leap days can be eight years. The walker accounts for that gap instead of adding four forever.
The weekday of February 29 is computed from the civil calendar of that leap year. The calculator reports it so invitations can name the weekday without a second lookup. Do not assume leap day always falls on the same weekday as January 1; it does not.
How to use it
Pick a date, calculate, read the next February 29 and weekday. For planning in 2026, if 2026 is not a leap year the returned date will be in a later year. Overlay holidays only if you care whether that leap day is also a federal observed holiday, which is uncommon.
Leap-day birthdays that observe February 28 in common years are a social or legal convention this page does not encode. It only names the next actual February 29.
Worked examples
A lease signed in March asks when the next February 29 occurs for a rare-event clause. Staff enter the signature date and copy the returned leap day into the clause. They do not paste a list of leap years without a month and day.
A classroom after a non-leap century discusses eight-year gaps. Students enter a date just after a skipped century leap and see the following true leap day, not the century year itself. The missing February 29 is the point.
Weekday of the leap day
February 29 is day 60 of a leap year. Its weekday therefore depends on January 1 and is not a free parameter. Two leap years that start on different weekdays have leap days on different weekdays. Matching year layouts on the same-calendar-years tool will share the leap day’s weekday because they share the whole grid.
People planning a leap-day event in 2026 should still run this calculator if 2026 might already have passed February 29. After March 1, the next leap day is in a later year even when 2026 was a leap year.
What this is not
Not a countdown clock with hours and time zones. Not Julian leap-day rules. Not an ISO week label for February 29 (use week-number tools if you need that week id). Not a reuse-calendar yes/no for wall prints.
Pair with monthly calendars for February of the leap year once you know which year it is, so the 29th sits on a month grid.
Century skips in the walk-forward
The search walks year by year (or leap-candidate by leap-candidate) until it finds a February 29 on or after the input. When the next divisible-by-4 year is a non-leap century, that year is skipped and the search continues. That is why “every four years” is not a safe mental shortcut near centuries.
Leap centuries divisible by 400 are kept. The walker does not special-case 400 beyond the usual Gregorian predicate used on the rest of Make a Calendar.
Contracts and rare-event clauses
Clauses that trigger on the next February 29 need a date, not a year list. Paste the returned date and weekday into the clause. If the contract is signed after February 29 in a leap year, the next leap day is already in a future year; do not assume “this leap year” still applies after March 1.
Insurance or lease language that says every four years is wrong near non-leap centuries. Point to the eight-year gap in the clause comments. This calculator is the exhibit for that comment.
Event planning after March
A leap-day party planned in April of a leap year is already late for that year’s 29th. The calculator will return a later February 29. Countdown pages that still show days to this year’s leap day after March 1 are using the wrong tool. Use this forward walker.

Gregorian century years are leap years only if divisible by 400. When a century skips February 29, the leap days on either side are eight years apart rather than four. The walker skips that century instead of pretending every fourth year has a 29th.
Is February 28 treated as a leap-day birthday?
No. The tool only names the next real February 29. Observing a leap-day birthday on February 28 or March 1 in common years is a social or legal choice outside this calculator. After March 1 in a leap year, the next 29th is already in a future leap year.
