Two Gregorian years share a January–December weekday layout only when both are leap years or both are common years, and January 1 falls on the same weekday. What the matcher actually compares

A year calendar is a stack of twelve month grids. Those grids line up only if the year has the same number of days and the same starting weekday. Leap years add February 29, which shifts every date after February 28 by one weekday compared with a common year that started on the same January 1. Matching leap status alone is not enough: two leap years that start on different weekdays print different January pages.

The result list is not a list of years with the same holidays, the same ISO week count, or the same fiscal labels. Federal observances move. ISO week 53 appears under a different rule. This matcher answers one planning question: will a full-year weekday grid for year A look identical if you reprint it for year B.

How to read the year list

Enter a civil year, then calculate. Each listed year shares leap status with the input and has January 1 on the same weekday. Nearby matches are most useful for reprinting last year’s wall calendar; farther matches help designers who keep a small library of twelve template files keyed by leap flag plus start weekday.

If the list looks sparse, that is expected. Common years typically wait six or eleven years for a full-layout repeat. Leap years wait longer, and century years that are not divisible by 400 skip February 29, which breaks a naive jump of twenty-eight years. Worked planning cases

A facilities manager has boxes of leftover January–December posters printed for a non-leap year that started on Wednesday. They enter that printed year here, then check whether next year’s civil year appears in the match list before ordering a new print run. If it does not, they order a new file rather than taping over February.

A teacher keeps one laminated leap-year grid and one common-year grid. Before laminating extras for 2026, they enter 2026 and confirm which stored grid matches. They still overlay 2026 holidays on sticky notes because holiday weekdays are not part of the layout match.

Leap years versus common years

A common year has 365 days and 52 weeks plus one leftover weekday. A leap year has 366 days and two leftover weekdays. Those leftovers decide how January 1 of the following year moves. After a common year, January 1 advances one weekday; after a leap year it advances two. That is why two years can start on the same weekday yet fail to match if only one contains February 29.

February is the month that exposes a false match. If someone reprints a leap-year grid in a common year, February shows a 29th that does not exist, and March–December weekdays are all wrong. If they reprint a common-year grid in a leap year, February 29 is missing and every later month is shifted. The matcher refuses both mistakes by requiring leap status equality.

January 1 weekday is the second lock

Calendar publishers often encode a year type as a pair: leap or common, plus the weekday of January 1 (or of January 1 and December 31). This tool uses that pair. Sunday-start and Monday-start printouts still match across years when the pair matches; only the column headers change if you later switch week start on calendar generator.

Do not confuse January 1 weekday with the weekday of a random mid-year date. July 4 can fall on the same weekday in two years that still have different February lengths. Always check the full-year pair, not a single holiday weekday.

What this page does not decide

Matching layouts do not mean matching pay dates, school terms, or retail 4-5-4 periods. Those systems use different year starts. A year that reprints cleanly as a civil wall calendar can still be a 53-week ISO year while another match is not. Use weeks in a year when ISO week count is the question.

The matcher also does not answer whether last year’s physical print can be reused next year as a yes/no for a specific pair of consecutive years. That narrower question lives on calendar reuse, which compares the printed year you enter with the following civil year only.

Century years and skipped leaps

Gregorian century years are leap years only when divisible by 400. A century that skips February 29 inserts a one-day discrepancy into any table that assumed a leap every four years. Years around those centuries therefore fail to match under a simple plus-twenty-eight rule even when January 1 looks familiar. This page checks actual leap status rather than assuming the four-year rhythm never breaks.

Historical reprints for years before the local Gregorian adoption date are out of scope. The tool uses the proleptic Gregorian rules the rest of the site uses for civil planning, not Julian leap tables used in some archives.

Design and print workflow

Keep source files named by leap flag and January 1 weekday, not by a single year number. When 2026 matches a file you already printed, export that file, then stamp the new year in the header. Month names and day numbers stay; only the year label and any holiday callouts need a pass.

If you need a fresh 12-month grid rather than a reuse decision, generate one with Sunday or Monday week start and treat this matcher as a catalog of years that can share that file.
