Why the civil date can flip near midnight
The solstice is an instant in time, usually expressed in UTC, then converted to local clocks. The countdown still ends at the instant, not at 12:00 a.m. on a chosen local date. Read the target line under the grid: it names the zone and the converted local date and time.

Longest day is related but not identical
Around the June solstice, northern sites see their longest daylight of the year. The exact longest day can differ from the solstice calendar date by a day because atmospheric refraction and the equation of time shift sunrise and sunset. A “longest day” party at a beach should check day length for the venue, not assume the solstice midnight is also sunset time.
This countdown does not tick to sunset. It ticks to the solstice instant. A festival that opens at dusk needs a sunset time after the solstice date is known.

A science class that graphs daylight through spring can project this countdown as the astronomical marker, then compare it with the district’s last day of school.
