Unlucky Fridays

Friday the 13th Calculator

Every Friday the 13th in a year, plus the next one after today.

Friday the 13th

Enter a year to list them. Months that start on Sunday have a Friday 13th.

Friday the 13th occurs in a month when the 13th falls on Friday, which is the same as saying the 1st falls on Sunday. This calculator lists every such month in a year and also names the next Friday the 13th after today. It is a calendar fact finder, not a superstition guide, and it does not rate luck or recommend travel changes.

The Sunday-the-1st rule

Date 13 is twelve days after date 1. Twelve days is one week plus five days, so the weekday of the 13th is five weekdays after the weekday of the 1st. Counting Sunday as the 1st lands Friday on the 13th. Any other start weekday puts the 13th on a different day. The tool uses that identity rather than scanning every date in the year.

A year can have one, two, or three Friday the 13ths. The pattern depends on leap status and the weekday of January 1. Common folklore that every year has one is false. Some years have three; a few have only one. The list for 2026 is computed from that year’s actual calendar, not from a rhyme.

How to use the calculator

Enter a year to list months whose 13th is Friday. Read the month names and the weekday confirmation. The next-occurrence line looks forward from today across year boundaries, so a December query can return January or February of the following year when needed.

If you need every Friday in the year, not only the 13ths, use date on weekday with Friday selected. This page filters to day-of-month 13. Mixing those jobs produces either too many dates or a missing next-occurrence helper.

Leap years change the month set

February 13 sits on Friday only when February 1 is Sunday. In a leap year February has 29 days, which changes the weekday of March 1 compared with a common year that started the same way. Therefore two years that start on the same January 1 weekday can still have different Friday-the-13th months if only one is a leap year.

Century years that skip the leap day follow the common-year month set even though they are divisible by four. Do not copy a leap-year Friday-the-13th table into a century common year. Recalculate the year you care about.

Worked examples

An events venue tracks Friday the 13th because themed bookings spike. They enter 2026, note the months, and hold a room block. They still check 2026 holidays so a Friday the 13th that coincides with an observed federal holiday is staffed as a closure, not as a party night.

A statistics teacher asks how many Friday the 13ths occur in 2026. The list is the answer. Students who then ask “which years look like this” should move to same calendar years because those years share the entire layout, including the same Friday-the-13th months.

Next Friday the 13th versus this year’s list

The yearly list can be empty of remaining dates if you ask in December after the last one has passed. The next-occurrence field still returns a future month, possibly in the next year. Operations calendars should store both: the in-year inventory and the upcoming date for countdown graphics.

“Next” is civil-date order, not ISO week order. A Friday the 13th in early January is next year’s first occurrence even if ISO week 1 started in December. Pair with week numbers only if a report header needs them.

Myths the calculator does not endorse

There is no extra cosmic rule that Friday the 13th clusters after full moons or after leap days beyond ordinary weekday arithmetic. The month set is fully determined by January 1 and leap status. Treating the date as unlucky is cultural; the tool only states when the date occurs.

Hotels and airlines may see demand changes; this page does not forecast bookings. It also does not list Tuesday the 13th or Friday the 17th used in other cultures. Those are different filters.

Printable context

To see the Friday the 13th sitting on a month grid, open monthly calendars for that month after you know which months qualify. The calculator is the index; the month page is the picture.

Year-at-a-glance posters can mark the 13ths with a small glyph once you know the months. Do not mark every Friday. The distinctive fact is the 13th, not the weekday alone.

Distribution across months

Friday the 13ths never occur in consecutive months, because consecutive firsts cannot both be Sunday. They can occur twice with a gap, or three times in some leap and common configurations. The list for 2026 is the distribution that actually occurs, not a folklore maximum of one per year.

February 13 on Friday is possible in both leap and common years when February 1 is Sunday. The leap distinction still matters for later months: a Sunday February 1 in a leap year does not imply the same March 1 weekday as in a common year. Recalculate rather than copying a February-only observation forward.

Operations versus entertainment

Themed retail needs the dates; hospitals do not change staffing because of the 13th unless they choose to. This page serves both audiences with the same list and no tone of warning. If a venue wants every Friday, they are on the wrong tool, as already noted with the weekday date finder.

Frequently asked questions

When is the 13th of a month a Friday?

The 13th is Friday when the 1st of that month is Sunday. Twelve days after Sunday is Friday. The calculator lists every month in the year that satisfies that start-weekday rule and also names the next Friday the 13th after today when you want a single upcoming date.

How many Friday the 13ths can one year have?

A Gregorian year can have one, two, or three Friday the 13ths. The count depends on whether the year is a leap year and on the weekday of January 1. Claims that every year has exactly one are false. Enter the year to see the actual months instead of relying on a rhyme.

Why do leap years change which months qualify?

February 29 shifts the weekday of March 1 and every later 1st compared with a common year that started on the same January 1. Months after February can therefore gain or lose a Sunday the 1st. Century years that skip the leap day behave like common years for this purpose.

What is the difference from listing every Friday?

Listing every Friday returns 52 or 53 dates, most of which are not the 13th. This page keeps only day-of-month 13 that fall on Friday. Use the weekday date finder for full Friday lists and this calculator when the 13th filter is the actual question.

How does the next occurrence handle year end?

If the last Friday the 13th in the entered year is already past, the next-occurrence line looks into the following year. It uses civil date order, not ISO week membership. December queries commonly return a January or February date in the next civil year.

Is Friday the 13th a US federal holiday?

No. Friday the 13th is a calendar coincidence, not a legal public holiday. Offices follow their normal Friday schedule unless a separate federal observed holiday also falls that day. Check the holidays list for closures rather than treating the 13th as an automatic day off.
