Mondays in a year

Weekday Occurrences in a Year

Count how many times a chosen weekday occurs in a year.

Weekday occurrences

Pick a year and a weekday (Monday, Friday, …).

This occurrences calculator counts how many times one chosen weekday happens in a year: how many Mondays, how many Fridays, how many Sundays. The answer is 52 or 53. It does not sum Monday–Friday together, and it does not list every matching date. Those jobs belong on weekdays-in-year and date-on-weekday respectively.

One weekday, one integer

Meeting cadence questions are often “how many Tuesdays can we meet in 2026.” The integer 52 or 53 is the answer. A leap year and January 1 weekday decide which weekdays get the extra occurrence. Two weekdays get 53 in a leap year; one weekday gets 53 in a common year.

Do not use weekdays in a year for this: that tool’s 261–263 range is the five-day sum. Asking it “how many Mondays” would be the wrong URL. Do not use date on weekday when you only need the count and not the date list.

Which weekdays get 53

In a common year, the weekday of January 1 occurs 53 times; the others occur 52 times. In a leap year, January 1’s weekday and the next weekday (the weekday of January 2, which is also February 29’s weekday relative to January 1) occur 53 times. The exact pair depends on leap status. The calculator applies that assignment so you do not have to.

Century years that are not leap years follow the common-year assignment even if divisible by 4. Confirm leap status on the leap year page if a textbook disagrees with a century.

How to run it

Pick a year and a weekday, calculate, read 52 or 53. For 2026 Mondays, select Monday and 2026. There is no holiday subtraction: if Christmas is a Wednesday, that Wednesday still counts as one of the year’s Wednesdays.

If you need the dates of those 53 Fridays, switch to the date-on-weekday finder. If you need Friday the 13ths only, switch to that filter. This page stops at the integer.

Worked examples

A podcast that publishes every Thursday wants to know how many episodes fit in 2026 without skipping holidays. They read the Thursday count, then subtract dates they choose to skip. The calculator does not know their skip list.

A city council that meets on the first and third Tuesday still uses the Tuesday count only as a sanity check; actual meeting dates need nth-weekday logic. This integer cannot replace “first Tuesday.”

Leap day as the extra occurrence

When February 29 falls on the chosen weekday, that is often the visible extra 53rd date for that weekday in a leap year. When leap day falls on a different weekday, the 53rd occurrence of your chosen day sits elsewhere in January or December. Trust the count; do not require leap day to be “the” extra Monday.

Common years never have February 29, so their single extra weekday is whichever day January 1 is.

Weekends and workweeks

Choosing Saturday here counts Saturdays, which is not the same as counting Saturday–Sunday pairs. Pair inventory is weekends in a year. Choosing Friday here is not Friday the 13th. Keep superstition dates on that calculator.

ISO week 53 does not mean Friday occurs 53 times. Different systems. ISO belongs on weeks-in-year.

Limits

No business-day skip, no holiday skip, no school-day skip. No list output. No ICS. One year, one weekday, one number.

For highlighted Monday–Friday year grids, use the workday calendar. For 14-day cycles, use the biweekly walker.

Publishing cadences

A weekly newsletter on Wednesday has 52 or 53 send dates. Editorial calendars that always commission 52 features will miss a Wednesday in a 53-Wednesday year. Read the integer first, then decide whether to skip a holiday Wednesday. The calculator does not skip it for you.

Monthly magazines that also want a Wednesday count for mid-week sales still need this integer, not the Monday–Friday sum. Mixing the two URLs in an analytics brief produces a 261-style number labeled as Wednesdays.

Meetings that are not every weekday instance

First-Tuesday boards cannot use 52 as the meeting count. They need nth-weekday dates. This integer is a sanity ceiling: you cannot have more first-Tuesdays than Tuesdays. It is not the meeting calendar. Keep nth-weekday for the dates and this page for the ceiling.

Friday-only clinics that close on observed holidays should subtract those Fridays after reading 52 or 53. 2026 holidays supplies the names; this page supplies the Friday total before subtraction.

Leap day and the 53rd occurrence

If you pick Friday and leap day is Friday, that 29th is one of the 53 Fridays. If leap day is Saturday, Friday’s extra occurrence sits on a different date, often in January or December. Students who hunt only in February for the extra Friday will miss it. The integer is still 53; the location is not required to be leap day.

Common years never place the extra occurrence on February 29 because that date does not exist. The extra is simply January 1’s weekday. That is the whole common-year story, and it is why entering the year matters more than memorizing a rhyme.

Frequently asked questions

What integer does the weekday occurrences calculator return?

It returns 52 or 53, the number of times the weekday you selected occurs in the year. It does not list the dates and it does not add Monday through Friday together. Christmas on a Wednesday still counts as a Wednesday. Holiday subtraction is a separate step after you have the integer.

How is this different from weekdays in a year?

Weekdays in a year totals all Monday–Friday dates, producing 261 to 263. This occurrences tool counts a single weekday you choose, such as Mondays only. Use the total for office-day capacity; use occurrences when the question names one day of the week.

When does a chosen weekday occur 53 times in a year?

In a common year, the weekday of January 1 occurs 53 times. In a leap year, two weekdays occur 53 times, determined by January 1 and leap day. Century years that skip February 29 follow the common-year pattern. The calculator applies the assignment for the year you enter.

Why not use the date-on-weekday finder for a count?

The finder lists every matching date, which is the right output for routes and mail merges. When you only need the integer for a forecast, this occurrences page is the smaller job. After you know there are 53 Fridays, switch to the finder if you then need the Friday dates.

Is a Saturday count the same as weekend pairs?

No. Saturday occurrences are a count of Saturday dates. Weekend pairs are Saturday plus the following Sunday and can split across New Year. Use weekends in a year for pair rows. Use this calculator when you asked how many Saturdays, not how many weekend blocks.

Is ISO week 53 the same as 53 Fridays?

No. ISO 53-week years follow the Thursday and leap-Wednesday rule. Friday’s 52 or 53 count follows leftover civil days and leap day. The two 53s are unrelated. Use weeks-in-year for ISO week count and this page for a named weekday’s occurrences such as Fridays only.
