Saturday–Sunday pairs
Weekend Dates Calculator
Every weekend in a year with a running count.
Weekends in a year
Enter a year. Partial New Year weekends are included when they fall in that year.
This calculator lists every Saturday–Sunday pair in a year and states how many such weekends there are. A weekend here is the Saturday and the following Sunday. When January 1 is a Sunday, that Sunday still belongs to a weekend whose Saturday fell in December of the previous year; the tool notes partial membership so you can see which civil year owns which day.
Pairs, not just Saturday count
Counting Saturdays is not the same as counting weekend pairs that sit inside the year. A year can contain 52 or 53 Saturdays and a matching or mismatched number of Sundays depending on January 1 and leap day. The pair list is the operational artifact: each row is a weekend people recognize as a two-day block.
This is not weekdays in a year, which totals Monday–Friday. It is not long weekends, which require a federal observed Friday or Monday attached to the pair. A plain Saturday–Sunday with no Friday holiday is still a weekend here.
How to read the list
Enter a year and calculate. Each row shows Saturday’s date and Sunday’s date. Count the rows for the year’s weekend inventory. In 2026 the list reflects that year’s leap status. Export to a staffing roster by copy-paste.
Federal holidays that fall on Monday create a long weekend; they do not remove the Saturday–Sunday pair from this list. Overlay 2026 holidays when you also need those Monday names.
Year-boundary weekends
If January 1 is Sunday, Saturday December 31 of the previous year plus January 1 is one social weekend split across years. This year’s list includes the Sunday and should make the split visible. If December 31 is Saturday, that Saturday’s Sunday is January 1 of the next year—another split. Staffing both years needs both lists.
ISO week 1 can also split across years, but ISO weeks are Monday–Sunday. A Saturday–Sunday pair is only the weekend tail of an ISO week, not the whole ISO week. Do not number these pairs with ISO week ids unless you also look up the week on the week-number tools.
Worked examples
A museum that is weekend-only opens on each pair in the list for 2026. They staff 52 or 53 weekends accordingly and handle New Year split weekends with a note on which day falls in which budget year.
A noise-ordinance study counts weekend days (Saturday plus Sunday) by doubling the pair count, then adding 1 if a split Sunday or Saturday sits alone in the year. The pair list is the source; the study’s day count is derived.
Leap Saturdays and Sundays
February 29 can be a Saturday or a Sunday. If it is Saturday, the pair is Feb 29–Mar 1. If it is Sunday, the pair is Feb 28–29. That leap weekend is an extra pair relative to a common year with the same January 1 weekday only when the extra day creates an additional Saturday–Sunday structure—leap status and start weekday interact, so regenerate rather than adding 1 blindly.
Century non-leap years omit that leap weekend even if divisible by 4 but not 400.
What this list will not do
No Friday night inclusion, no religious Sabbath variants, no “weekend” defined as Friday–Sunday. US federal long weekends are a superset topic on the long-weekend finder. Office workday shading is the workday calendar.
For every Saturday date without pairing Sunday, use date-on-weekday with Saturday. This page insists on pairs because the job-to-be-done is weekends as blocks.

Staffing and venue hours
Weekend-only venues staff from the pair list, not from a Saturday count. A split New Year weekend may need two budget years to pay one social weekend. Note which day sits in which year on the roster. 2026’s first pair might include a January Sunday whose Saturday was last December.
Security companies that bill per weekend pair should attach this list to the contract appendix. Adding a Monday long-weekend holiday does not add a pair; it adds a weekday. Bill that Monday on the long-weekend finder, not by inflating the pair count.
Noise and parking studies
Studies that average Saturday and Sunday traffic can use the pair list as the sample frame. Drop split-year pairs if the study window is only 2026 civil dates, or keep the Sunday and drop the Saturday according to the protocol. Write the rule down; the list supplies pairs, not the study’s inclusion logic.
53 Saturdays versus 52 pairs
A year can contain 53 Saturdays and still list 52 complete Saturday–Sunday pairs inside that civil year if the extra Saturday’s Sunday sits in January of the next year. That is why this page lists pairs instead of doubling a Saturday count. Read the row count, not a weekday-occurrence integer for Saturday.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a weekend on this pair calculator?
A weekend is a Saturday paired with the following Sunday. The tool lists each pair in the year and counts the rows. It does not include Friday, and it does not require a federal holiday. Split New Year weekends are noted when Saturday and Sunday fall in different civil years.
How is this different from counting Saturdays only?
A year can have a Saturday whose Sunday is in the next year, or a Sunday whose Saturday was last year. Pair rows capture those splits. A Saturday count alone does not tell staffing which two-day blocks sit inside the year. Use date-on-weekday if you only need Saturday dates.
When does January 1 split a weekend across years?
If January 1 is a Sunday, the Saturday of that weekend is December 31 of the previous year. This year’s list includes the Sunday and should show the split. If December 31 is Saturday, the Sunday is January 1 of the next year. Budget both years with both lists.
Why are federal long weekends still listed as pairs?
Long weekends add a Friday or Monday observed holiday beside the weekend. They do not delete Saturday and Sunday. This list always includes the pair. Use the long-weekend finder when the question is which federal observances create a Friday–Monday stretch.
How does February 29 change the weekend pair list?
If leap day is Saturday, the pair is February 29 and March 1. If it is Sunday, the pair is February 28 and 29. Leap status and January 1 weekday together decide whether an extra pair appears versus a common year. Recalculate instead of adding one pair by habit after every leap year.
Is a weekend the same as an ISO week?
No. ISO weeks run Monday through Sunday. A Saturday–Sunday pair is only the last two days of that ISO week. Pair counts are not 52 versus 53 ISO weeks. Use weeks-in-year for the ISO week count and this page for weekend blocks.
